A series about a seemingly innocent student, Jisoo who lives a double life as the head of a sex trafficking business, and the reprecautions of his classmate and crush, finding out.
At first, I could not understand where this show was going, was it going to be more romance than action or more action than romance, turns out it was basically all action. Which I did not mind. The actors in this show did such a good job of portraying their characters so well, and apart from the male lead, and the detectives,. This was one of those shows that had you rooting for the main character despite the fact that he was basically a pimp for all age groups, but looking at his face, you’d never guess, we all just wanted him to live an ordinary life and then die, but that’s where Gyuri came in. With the arrival of Bae Gyuri, things started to escalate, starting with her idea of using a male escort. The thing about Gyuri is you could never tell what was going through her mind or what her intentions were, although at the end we came to see what she needed the money for. Now for a character analysis
Oh Jisoo: The quiet guy in class who secretly runs a business that connects clients with escorts/ or as they like to call it ‘’ compensated dating’’. He seems to have a crush on Bae Gyuri, and after a series of unfortunate events lead to them partnering up, they both go down a whole that they will never be able to get out off. Even though I rooted for Jisoo, I couldn’t help but get mad at him sometimes, for someone who runs such a dangerous business, he was…how do I say this nicely? A wimp, yeah he had his bursts of anger, like when he tased his father, or when he punched one of Kitae’s friends, but other than that, Gyuri was basically what you’d imagine uncle to be, if uncle was a high school student. Not that I have a problem with Gyuri wearing the pants in the relationship, but there were times where I wished Jisoo would just punch someone, or simply just speak up, and I guess I feel that way because I’m way to similar to Jisoo, and seeing him be all timid, angers me because that’s exactly how I am. Anyways, the ending came as such a huge shocker, I don’t think he will ever be able to live it down if minhee dies. I know Netflix loves to keep an ending open in case it gets really popular so that there can be a season 2, but we really need to know who helped Gyuri and Jisoo( I’m suspecting Mr. Cho), where Kitae is, and if minhee died.
Bae Gyuri: Don’t we just love to see a series with a strong lead female that doesn’t always need to be saved, I’m not saying this is the only instance cause I’ve watched a notable lot with strong female leads, but this was still nice to watch. You could tell that Gyuri had a lot of hidden demons, from the way she picked at her hands, to her imagining shooting her parents in the head, I empathized with her because it could not have been easy to keep on getting all that criticism from your own mom. I do think she had good intentions when she partnered up with Jisoo, but I wish she wasn’t so… what’s the word? Persistent, at the end of the series, I got to thinking, and then wondered, is Gyuri a sociopath? We might never know.
Seo Minhee : You could tell from the get go that the relationship she had with Kitae was the epitome of toxicity, we didn’t really get a deep meaning for her doing the compensated dating, but we could see that she felt a little pressure to continue because she knew that without the money, her relationship with Kitae would be non-existent, I couldn’t help but root for her throughout the series, and I honestly felt bad for her when Mr. Lee died, because you could tell she saw him as such a father figure. It’s sad the way her story ended, and I hope ( if she doesn’t die) she gets some type of redemption.
Kitae Kwak: What can I say?, Even though he was such an evil bully, and had a give and take relationship with minhee, you could tell he did somewhat care for her, I mean, what says I love you, more than gathering about 20 boys to potentially ruin their lives just so you can beat up the man pimping out ‘’ your girl’’, yeah that was really stupid, and even though he said he was going to be expelled, you could see that he felt no remorse, he’s probably not capable of feeling that emotion, I don’t know who’s endings where more cryptic between the core four. You never expect the main character to die, and as Kitae violently stabbed Jisoo, I felt my soul leave my body. I really do hope one day he faces some truly damning reparations for his misdeeds.
Mr. Lee: It’s a shame that he died, but at least he died doing what he came to the karaoke club for, even though it seemed like he knew that Jisoo was uncle, I was still a bit confused. But I mean that whole episode was a whirlwind of one disaster to another.
Mr. Cho: I felt bad for the poor man, being left in the dark all the time, but I admired him as a teacher, you don’t have a lot of teachers lime him anymore, at least not in my world. I’m really clinging on to the hope that the phone call he got was from Gyuri, and that he got them somewhere safe.
Detective Haegyoung: If it weren’t for her meddling… I’m kidding, but if she hadn’t found that stash of money, things might’ve been somewhat normal, I mean she was just doing her job, and she did the job well, but we all know that there’s no way she was ever going to find out the real truth of everything unless someone told her, cause there were just way too many things that went on. Nevertheless, she was an honorable woman.
Daeyol : It’s a shame that he died, because he was fighting a losing battle, why come after the person doing his job when it was your girlfriend who called him over, killing him would have meant nothing because his girlfriend would’ve continued cheating. You could tell that he knew this deep-down, and was really just trying to put up the bad boy act.
The writer’s and director of this series, did such a good job with it, you could see how everything was connected, and let’s give a little attention to Jisoo’s dreams, cause I personally loved how trippy they were, it was a very accurate representation of dreams. Netflix, the rest is up to you #extracurricularseason2
