I did not think I would have a lot to talk about concerning this show. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that i do.
Girl from nowhere is a drama which centers around a girl named Nanno who transfers to different schools and exposes the misdeeds of teachers or students, or shows them who they truly are.
This show had me thinking a lot after I was done with the last episode. Thinking about the ending, and thinking about how the concept of the show applies to life.
I loved season one, we get to know Nanno and what she is capable of, and the last episode tells us more about her, in the sense that we know she has been doing this for a very long time, maybe even decades.
I don’t have a favorite episode, but if I had to, it would be “social love” just because it was so obviously strange. The obsession of the whole school with their relationship. And then that ending...it showed a new, weirder side of the show, because before that, the storylines were fairly normal. It was one of those episodes that had me thinking.
I also think we got to see a new side of Nanno in “lost and found” she was obviously playing a role, but we could see that she actually liked TK, or maybe a part of her did. And this episode didn’t end with him getting any punishments, she actually gave him what he wanted. So that was also a change from the normal ‘status quo’
Season 2 was also good, although I wish we had more episodes, but with a three year gap from season one, I’m thankful we even got it at all. The thing with this season is that although I like the fact that we had a continuing storyline due to Yuri, it was a bit confusing because until she appeared, we never knew anything about Nanno and her abilities, and I mean this in the sense that she never talked about it, and then all of a sudden she starts saying stuff like “You can’t do this job” What job is this exactly? I know she is supposed to be some type of tempter or entity meant to show you your true self, but I wish that we got at least one hint in season 1 about who she is, so that it wouldn’t feel so sudden in season 2. I also find it interesting how nobody else has drank Nanno’s blood. It seemed like an accident that could have happened before. Maybe it has?
But the change in Nanno’s demeanor at the end of season 2 is what really intrigued me. We’ve always known her to be fearless, and never flinch, and I thought she would be able to deal with Yuri, but to see her have doubt and falter was quite surprising.
I have to give credit to the director for the cinematography we saw throughout the show. The episode where the camera would transition from their backs to another scene ‘True love (S2)’. The episode where the screen size kept gradually changing ‘Trophy (S1)’. The episode where everything was in black and white, except those pops of color that represented defiance ‘Liberation (S2)’They were all so intentional and pleasing to watch, it felt like I was watching a high budget and high standard show, and that is always nice.
The ending of season 2...
Nanno didn’t die. At least I think so, because in the last scene we could see someone sitting on a ledge and watching while Yuri and Junko parted ways. But why that scene of the teacher stabbing her continuously, and then her crying blood? Probably to show how she felt knowing yuri would destroy the world. It felt all too real, and it would be believed that Nanno was dead because we were already getting clues of her getting weak in the form of the scar on her neck from earlier that refused to heal.
Yuri’s “I will give people the power to destroy each other” and then Nanno’s ending statement “ in a world where everyone thinks they are free and does whatever the hell they want, am I really necessary anymore?” Were both cryptic and straightforward. Are they referring to the world we already live in, or the world we are about to?
I also wonder what Yuri ends up doing to the world, because we know all she wants is to kill.
There’s a lot to wonder about, which is why I hope it gets a third season.
This was a very entertaining and insightful drama to watch, it had me thinking more about the world, and how you can could portray yourself in one way, but be completely different inside.
For those that have watched...if nanno came to your school, do you think you would be a target?
For me, I truly do not know...
