There is definitely a lot to unpack in this review, so get comfy.
How do I explain this show in a few words? I guess only people who have watched sky castle will understand. Basically, it's sky castle on steroids.
This was such a hard show to watch, and I had a love hate relationship with it. Yes the drama was amazing, but that also means there were so many moments where you just want to turn off the tv. The scenes where either Seol-ah or Ro-na were getting bullied made me groan every time, the bullying was so intense, and for what? There was just never, and will never be a good reason.
The whole Rona and Seok-kyung thing was so cute. I know what kind of person Seok-kyung is, I won’t forget what he did to Seol-ah, but out of the whole group, he seemed the most apologetic, so I guess that counts for something, but I hope the viewers do not forget that he did those things, and even when he wasn’t doing them, he sat back and let his friends do it.
Back to him and Rona. I wish we got more scenes of them, but even I know that’s too much to ask for, in the whole toxicity of the show, it was nice to see a relationship bloom, but it’s not a show about young love. I’m just glad we got them at all. I just started season 2, and I really hope they end up back together, that might also be too much to ask for considering the bad history they now have.
Eun byeol: She was one of the characters I hated the most. She really did have such a weak mentality, and it showed every time she tried getting back at Ro-na, but it ending up back in her. I get that her mom had a huge role in how she turned out, but she was/is still a very horrible person.
Seol A : She is the one I felt the most sorry towards. It’s not right that she had such a tragic death. As if that wasn't sad enough, she had to go through so much on the days leading up to her death, and even the day of her death ( them moving her body). It’s all so heartbreaking. I hoped that it would be revealed that she found out Su-ryeon was her mother before she died because it just felt like she died too pitifully. I’m glad that she at least had people to fight for her after she died.
Now onto the bigger characters…
Joo Dan-Tae : Words cannot begin to express the hatred I had for this man. There were certain scenes were I could not look at his face. Literally. I had to focus on the subtitles to avoid it. There is no way this man was human, and the show proved this over and over again with each episode. He kidnapped and almost killed a minor, who was the same age as his children ( talk about having no empathy), killed his wife’s fiancé to get her, just to cheat on said wife, and then kill said wife. The list goes on.
The writers really made us think that him, Cheon Seo-jin and the rest of hers club would get caught, but of course, in true penthouse fashion, a twist came. I’m glad there is a season 2, because if it ended the way it did with no explanation, then I would be very angry, and do some other things I can’t mention on here cause I have to be professional.
He was such a vile man. I honestly do not think he can coexist with Seo-jin. They have such strong personalities, and one would always want to trump the other, they’re also both cheaters and hypocrites.
Seo-jin was also one of the people I could not bear to watch. Every time eun byeol had something going on, she always made it worse. I know that she must have been raised similarly, but she is smarter than that. I wish it came to light that she was the one who slashed Yoon-hee’s neck, because that would have really broken her. Praying that the writers do that in S2 or S3. There’s so much more to say about her, and I might post another review that will be more in-depth on their characters.
Oh Yoon-hee: She deserved what was coming to her. To be honest I never really liked her ( I don’t like anybody, I promised myself to be numb to them because that’s the only way to get through this show), knowing the kind of man Dan-tae is, why would she get involved? There is no way getting involved with him would end up good. Did she really think he would leave Seo-Jin for her? It was such a messy thing for her to get into, she should’ve just stuck to the game plan, which was to take back the money he stole. She also betrayed Su-ryeon in the worst ways.
I never expected for her to be the one that killed Seol A, but at the same time I did because it would be too obvious if it was actually Dan-tae or Seo-Jin. But how drunk do you have to be to kill someone?
It all was in vain anyway because Ro-na will not be able to go back to Cheong A ( at least not till everything is cleared up).She didn’t deserve to be framed, but she does deserve to go to jail for Seol A’s death. I did watch a few scenes from season 2, and I'm curious to see how she ends up back in the plot.
I cannot believe Su-ryeon got killed, it felt like she was so close, and then it ended up all being in vain, but we saw that she tried her best, and that counts for something.
The producers did a great job of keeping the show interesting for all 21 episodes. And I can’t wait to see what happens next. Brb, got to continue season 2.
Rating : 9.3/10
